Playground Memories

Written By Unknown on Saturday, March 3, 2012 | 4:09 PM

Saturday was another example of glorious Spring-like weather (if a bit chilly with the wind) in this wacky winter we've been having. My wife and I took our daughter to a playground and watched her run around tirelessly for over an hour. She used to be afraid of the slides and swings, but now she can't get enough of them.

Seeing her laughing and playing reminded me of how much fun I used to have as a kid at the playground near Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, or playing with the swingset and slide in my parent's backyard.

Memory is a strange beast. I sometimes can't remember what I ate for breakfast, but those childhood memories came flooding back to me as if they happened yesterday. I can remember the color of the sky as I was swinging during some summer twilight hour so long ago. Time definitely flies.

Earlier in the day we were in Manhattan and we decided to drive through Greenwich Village -- the East Village, which my wife affectionately refers to as "NYU's campus."  She was a student at New York University, and she pointed out the dormatories where she lived and the sites where she hung out during her four undergraduate years. It was fun watching her reaction to the places that have changed and the ones that are still the same as before, all this time later.

It's fun to reminisce, but it's also great to enjoy the present as we make new memories together.
