Broadway Revivals I Would Like to See

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 | 8:23 PM

With all the revivals on Broadway this season, there are still some shows I wouldn't mind seeing again on the stage.  If producers are looking for ideas on what former theatrical shows to bring back again, here are my picks:

Pippin - My wife and I love Godspell and Wicked, so we would enjoy seeing a return of Pippin. I really connected to the story of a young prince searching for the right path in life. The songs are amazing -- "Magic to Do," "Corner of the Sky," "Glory," "Spread a Little Sunshine," "Extraordinary," and all the rest. An imaginative creative team can do wonders with the source material.

West Side Story - I know, I know, it's a classic, it will be compared to the movie, it's been done to death, but I still think in the hands of a visionary director and contemporary choreographer this could really spark some renewed interest with today's audiences. The beloved story of starcrossed lovers in the middle of a gang war still stands the test of time. Set in the 1950s, it can have a very modern feel, addressing themes that still resonate today.

Damn Yankees - Even though Hollywood is planning a movie remake, I would still like to see them revive this for the stage. It's such a fun little show about a baseball fan tired of watching his favorite team lose so he makes a deal with the Devil to turn them into winners -- for a price of course. "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets" -- well, I hope Lola wants a revival.

The Who's Tommy - I still regret never seeing this musical when it ran on Broadway. I would love to witness those great songs performed live in a new theatrical production -- "Sensation," "Pinball Wizard," "I'm Free," "We're Not Gonna Take It." They're reviving everything else, why not this?

Cats - Andrew Lloyd Webber has two of his old shows back on Broadway -- Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita -- so why not another?  Yes, Cats has a pretty weak story, but the songs are fantastic and it's fun to watch. I would love my little daughter to see a quality production of this when she's old enough.

There are plenty of others -- The Full Monty, The Music Man, Blood Brothers, Hair, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Rent.  (That's quite an eclectic mix, isn't it?) Of course I would like to see more original shows, but if Broadway is going to keep dipping into the past anyway, why not select some of these favorites for another shot at the spotlight?
