Have you heard the news? Van Halen is coming back! David Lee Roth on vocals, Eddie Van Halen on lead guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums, and Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass guitar (he replaced original bassist Michael Anthony back in 2007) -- a new tour in 2012, an upcoming new single and video on January 10, and a brand new album on February 7. Some jaded whippersnappers may not appreciate the legacy of Van Halen, but the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers have been making great music (off-and-on) for forty years.
Over the decades, Van Halen has given us great lyrics ("Sleep and dream, that's all I crave"), upbeat rock tunes, and powerful ballads. To commemorate this great occassion, here is a list of my top personal favorite Van Halen songs (in alphabetical order and linked to their music video on YouTube):
"Hot for Teacher"
"Jump"
"Love Walks In"
"Panama"
"When It's Love"
"Why Can't This Be Love"
Yes, yes, I know, there are other great ones: "Runnin' with the Devil," "Dance the Night Away," "Jamie's Cryin'," "One I Want," "Dreams," "Fire in the Hole," "Poundcake," "Humans Being," "Without You," "Ice Cream Man," "Cathedral," "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love," "Spanish Fly," "1984," "Eruption," "Unchained," and "Top of the World," but the ones I listed are my own faves. Which ones are yours?
