With so much content overwhelming our senses through the myriad media around us today, a lot of good programming falls through the cracks. One such show is the excellent comedy Community, which is in its third season and facing cancellation from its parent network NBC. My wife was introduced to the show by her friend Jennifer, and after hearing her rave about it, I finally tuned in to a few episodes myself and now I'm hooked as well.
The sitcom, set in a small college, is right up my alley with pop culture references galore and laugh-out-loud geeky moments. How did I ever miss it before? Except for Chevy Chase, who plays the millionaire Pierce Hawthorne, I was mostly unfamiliar with the rest of the actors in the cast, but they're all so amazingly funny -- Joel McHale as the former lawyer Jeff Winger, Alison Brie as the lovely but quirky Annie Edison, Danny Pudi as film student Abed Nadir, Yvette Nicole Brown as single mom Shirley Bennett, Ken Yeong as teacher Ben "Senor" Chang, and Jim Rash as Dean Craig Pelton. My favorite character is the wacky one-time anarchist Britta Perry, played wonderfully by Gillian Jacobs, and my wife's favorite is the adorable nerd Troy Barnes, brought to life by the talented Donald Glover.
A bunch of my friends recommended Community to me in the past, but I never got around to tuning in until my wife convinced me to give it a try. It lasted three years, will it last more?
