I hope everyone had a happy Labor Day weekend. Now it's time to look ahead at the movies coming up during the fall season. Here are the ones (in alphabetical order) that grabbed my attention, for good or ill.
Abduction - I'm still not convinced that Taylor Lautner can carry a movie as a leading man, but this action thriller is director by John Singleton and co-stars Alfred Molina, Maria Bello, and Sigourney Weaver, so I have some hope.
The Adventures of Tintin - This character is known internationally, but will American audiences pay attention, even if the cartoon is directed by Steven Spielberg?
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked - I can't believe this series is so successful.
Anonymous - Roland Emmerich, master of the disaster flick, tries his hand at a period piece, exploring the notion that William Shakespeare's plays were actually written by the Earl of Oxford. The cast includes Rhys Ifans, Derek Jacobi, Vanessa Redgrave, Xavier Samuel, and David Thewlis.
Contagion - Director Steven Soderbergh has come a long was since sex, lies, and videotape. Now he gives us a thriller about an out-of-control plague. Before you roll your eyes and think he has sold out, take a look at his all-star cast: Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Winslet. I'm expecting this to be more like his great movie Traffic than typical end of the world schlock.
Dreamhouse - Both my wife and I are eager to see this horror movie starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts. The teaser gave away a major plot point, but apparently there are other twists in the film, so we'll give it a shot.
Drive - Ryan Gosling plays a getaway car driver who gets in over his head and has to run for his life in this heist action adventure flick.
Footloose - This is evidence that Hollywood is running out of movies to remake.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - David Fincher's American-version adaptation of the Stieg Larsson bestselling phenomenon finally comes to the screen. Will it live up to the hype and top the Swedish movie version?
Happy Feet Two - Can Warner Bros. recapture the success of the original animated penguin blockbuster? Elijah Wood and Robin Williams return with a string of superstars who lend their voices.
Hugo - I'm willing to give anything that Martin Scorsese directs a try. They're not calling it science fiction, but it involves an automaton. Close enough to pique my fanboy interest.
Immortals - Henry Cavill, who will star as Superman in 2013, portrays another legendary hero, Theseus from Greek mythology. It's directed by the always interesting Tarsem Singh.
In Time - I'm actually excited to see this science fiction movie. Sure, it stars Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy, but the big selling factor for me is director Andrew Niccol, the man responsible for Gattaca.
Jack and Jill - Adam Sandler plays dual roles in this alleged comedy. It guest stars my acting hero Al Pacino if that's any consolation.
Johnny English Reborn - If you like the goofy comedy of Rowan Atkinson, then this superspy spoof is for you.
Killer Elite - I don't care what anyone says, this looks good -- Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Robert DeNiro, and guns! I'm there.
The Lion King in 3D - The good news is that one of the greatest movies of all time is being re-released. The bad news is that it's been converted into 3D.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - Tom Cruise looks for a hit, jumping back on this action franchise as Ethan Hunt.
Moneyball - The trailer for this motion picture adaptation of the bestselling book about the true story of the Oakland Athletics improbable journey into the baseball playoffs looks fantastic. Brad Pitt looks to be in top form.
The Muppets - Can they ever recapture the brilliance of the Jim Henson era films -- The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, and The Muppets Take Manhattan? My fingers are crossed.
Paranormal Activity 3 - The first two movies in this "found-footage" horror series didn't really motivate me to go see it, but the trailer for the third part seemed interesting. I might give it a chance.
Piranha 3DD - A silly title for what will likely be a dumb sequel.
Puss in Boots - Instead of the umpteenth Shrek movie, DreamWorks Animation gives us a Shrek spinoff, starring the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris.
Real Steel - This Hugh Jackman starrer about pugilistic robots looks cheesy as heck (think a cross between Rocky and Short Circuit), but you never know.
The Rum Diary - Johnny depp stars in this adaptation of a Hunter S. Thompson novel.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return, continuing the action reboot of Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective, directed by Guy Ritchie.
The Thing - John Carpenter's remake in 1982 actually improved upon the 1951 original, but will this remake of the remake (or is it a prequel?) be able to do it again?
The Three Musketeers - How many times can they remake the Alexandre Dumas classic? This one is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson who gave us Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Soldier, Resident Evil, Alien vs. Predator, Death Race, and Resident Evil: Afterlife.
Tower Heist - Even though this is directed by Brett Ratner, I think it has potential because of the cast -- Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leone, Dave Chappelle, and Alan Alda. Give it a chance.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part One - The Twilight series tries to mimic the success of Harry Potter by splitting the final chapter into two movies. Here is the first.
A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas - Either you love the Harold and Kumar series or you don't. I do.
Here are some other movies coming up that didn't grab my interest, but are coming our way during the next few months: 50/50, Arthur Christmas, The Big Year, Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, Courageous, Dolphin Tale, The Ides of March, I Don't Know How She Does It, The Mighty Macs, So Undercover, Straw Dogs, Wanderlust, Warrior, We Bought a Zoo, and What's Your Number.
