Since Godzilla is one of my guilty pleasures, I'm excited that a new Hollywood version of the giant Japanese monster is in development, to be directed by Gareth Edwards. Deadline Hollywood reported that David S. Goyer has been hired to write the screenplay, building on a story by David Callaham.
Legendary Pictures isn't even a decade old, yet it has already given us some noteworthy films, including hits Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, 300, The Hangover, and Inception, as well some movies that received mixed reviews and lackluster ticket sales but still had some redeemeing qualities, like Superman Returns, Watchmen, Where the Wild Things Are, Clash of the Titans, Due Date, and Sucker Punch. It also had some outright flops like Lady in the Water and Jonah Hex.
Director Gareth Edwards made waves with his low-budget but critically-acclaimed independent film Monsters. It will be interesting to see what he does with Godzilla.
David Goyer is a good choice to write the script. He did a fine job on the Blade trilogy and working with Christopher Nolen on the recent Batman films. He is also the writer for the upcoming Superman reboot, The Man of Steel. I believe he can take the foundation provided by David Callaham (who wrote The Expendables) and turn it into something interesting -- at the least, more interesting than the last American Godzilla adaptation, which was a snoozefest and had little resemblance to the Toho monster beloved by millions.
Go, go, Godzilla!
