Some folks have gifted voices, able to sing anything and make it sound amazing. I love music and sing when I think no one is looking (or more importantly, listening). I used to sing on stage when I was a kid in productions of The Music Man, The Robber Bridegroom, and West Side Story, but voices change, and with no vocal training, I never properly developed mine. I still occassionally might belt out a diddy or two if a role I'm playing calls for it, but it's usually for nothing more than humorous effect.
Tonight I'm attending What I Always Wanted to Do: The Musical - 2011, Darknight Productions' annual showcase of local actors who bravely hop on the stage in front of a live audience and sing their hearts out. It's a wonderful event and the performers always blow me away with their hidden talent.
Maybe someday, after some lessons, I might build up the courage to at least sing with a chorus, if I manage not to shatter any glass or eardrums in the process.
My wife, on the other hand, has an amazing voice. I've been trying to convince her to sing in front of an audience so they can enjoy her angelic tones -- maybe someday she'll agree.
Programs like the What I Always Wanted to Do series are a terrific way to help performers build up their confidence and take whatever singing skill they might have and elevate it to a higher level.
