A Review of the New Looney Tunes Show

Bugs Bunny and the gang are back in the brand new Looney Tunes Show on the Cartoon Network.  The good news is that it is not as ludicrously bad as previous recent attempts to update the classic cartoon characters for modern audiences.  The bad news is that it still does not measure up to those original Warner Bros. animated shorts that delighted generations.

The look of the characters at least is faithful to those bygone toons, not the abominations known as the Loonatics Unleashed.  The voices, however, are slightly off, not the familiar intonations of the legendary Mel Blanc.

While it's fun to see the beloved characters return in new adventures, which are slightly better than the strained marketing movie Space Jam, the writers of The Looney Tunes Show seem more interested in writing a typical sitcom rather than something closer to the style of the originals.  It's entertaining to see cameos by Speedy Gonzalez and other familiar characters, but the personalities seem off-kilter.  Rather than the scheming fowl we all know and love, Daffy Duck is depicted as a completely stupid baffoon.  He and Bugs are turned into an Odd Couple who compete on a game show to win a trip on a cruise.  Is that really the best they can come up with?

The most inspired moment from the first episode was a spoof of Superman, complete with the awesome John Williams musical score.  But the rest of the episode did not live up to that high point.  There was even an animated music video, a contemporary "Merrie Melodies," a silly ode to grilled cheese with Elmer Fudd that came across as more of a Saturday Night Live skit, the kind with a one-note punchline that grows old pretty fast.

Will the new show resonate with audiences, young and old?  Will its comedy rise to the level of those timeless classics?  Time will tell.  Hopefully, they will at least stay faithful to the original.
