The Cartoon Network announced that it will debut a new animated series in 2013 called Beware the Batman. This will be the first time an all computer-generated cartoon of the Dark Knight will be on the air, but it is by no means the first (or last) time the Caped Crusader has been brought to life via animation. Here's what has come before, in backward chronological order.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold - People either loved this version or hated it. Batman teamed up with other heroes, and the tone was very similar to the campy Adam West television series.
The Batman - Batman goes anime as this new rendition has a very Japanese animation style and it lasts five seasons.
Batman Beyond - Set in the future, this rendition of the hero and his legacy turned out to be more popular than I expected.
Justice League Unlimited - A direct sequel to the Justice League cartoon, the roster of characters was expanded and Batman and the rest of the core group received less screen time but still had a prominent role.
Justice League - Batman battles evil alongside the Justice League of America -- Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, the Flash, and Green Lantern.
The New Batman Adventures - This sequel to the popular Batman: The Animated Series had a different style and different character designs and didn't reach the level of pop culture success that the original did.
Superman: The Animated Series - The makers of Batman: The Animated Series tried to strike gold again with Superman as the star, and Batman having an occasional cameo.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm - Some claim that this movie version of Batman: The Animated Series had the best story of all the Batman films.
Batman: The Animated Series - Without a doubt, this is one of the greatest cartoons of all time.
The New Adventures of Batman - In 1977, this cartoon featured Batman, Robin, and Batgirl fighting crime. The episodes were later re-aired as part of a number of compilation shows -- The Batman/Tarzan Adventure Hour, Tarzan and the Super 7, and Batman and the Super 7.
Super Friends - Although corny by modern standards, this is one of the defining superhero cartoons ever made, featured the top characters of DC Comics teaming up to stop the bad guys. It had numerous sequels -- The All New Super Friends Hour, All-New Super Friends/Challenge of the Super Friends, The World's Greatest Super Friends, The Best of the Super Friends, Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show, and The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians.
The New Scooby-Doo Movies - Yes, Batman guest starred with the scardey-cat dog and his detective buddies.
Batman with Robin the Boy Wonder - The Adventures of Batman gets rebranded.
The Adventures of Batman - Batman goes it alone.
The Batman/Superman Hour - This anthology cartoon features adventure stories starring Batman, Superman, and Superboy.
How will Beware the Batman compare?
