Darren Aronofsky to Direct Noah's Ark Movie?

Nikki Finke's popular Hollywood news blog Deadline.com is reporting that director Darren Aronofsky wants to do an "edgy" movie based on the story of Noah's Ark.  Apparently he's looking for a budget of $130,000,000.  Thusfar, his films have been low-budget but critical favorites, including his original quirky black-and-white science fiction thriller Pi, his emotional Requiem for a Dream (starring Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Ellen Burstyn), the ambitious millennia-spanning sci-fi romance The Fountain (starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz), and his superb The Wrestler (starring Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, and Evan Rachel Wood in their finest performances).  His recent Black Swan, with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, was an Academy Award and box-office winner.  Now we'll see if he can continue that hot streak with a mega-budget.

Aronofsky has been seeking a blockbuster mainstream film to be his next project, but hasn't been artistically satisfied.  He was linked to both a Robocop remake and The Wolverine (a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine) before dropping out over creative differences.  He is still working on bringing Machine Man, based on a science fiction novel by Max Berry, to the big screen.

I'm curious to see his rendition of the biblical story of Noah.  Will it be a fantasy world interpretation?  Will it be a literal retelling of the Great Flood and the Ark?  Will it be a revisionist version, trying to tell the tale in a realistic fashion?

One of the charms of Aronofsky as a director is his unbridled imagination, his great visual sense, and his talent for bringing out the best in his actors.  He has proven that he can take a low-budget script and turn it into cinematic gold.  Will he give us the same gripping storytelling and sensory delights when he has over a hundred million dollars to spend, or will his artistry become lost in a major studio tent-pole production?
